ZAP Engineering central oil stabilization facility Train 6 expansion — Colorado

Onshore Oil & Gas Upstream

Central Oil Stabilization Facility

Brownfield expansion adding a sixth stabilization train to an existing central oil stabilization facility in Colorado.

Project Overview

ZAP was engaged by a major upstream operator to provide detailed engineering for a brownfield expansion of an existing central oil stabilization facility in Colorado. The project added a sixth stabilization train, increasing total facility throughput from 125,000 to 150,000 barrels per day to support the client’s ongoing DJ Basin drilling program.

Sixth Train Stabilization Process Expansion

The expansion scope included two new inlet heat exchangers, a supplemental heat medium heater, a new inlet surge vessel sized to serve both the new train and a future seventh train, and a full stabilization tower and skid package. The process heats incoming crude above its wax appearance temperature, separates light ends through a reflux-condenser and reflux accumulator circuit, and recovers a stabilized oil product at pipeline specification. All new equipment was designed for a nominal capacity of 30,000 barrels per day to accommodate future growth.

Brownfield Integration & Added Throughput Capacity

Additional compression, booster pumping, and oil product pumping capacity was added to support the increased facility throughput. Executed within an active operating facility, the project required careful integration of new equipment with the existing five-train infrastructure, utility systems, and compression and pumping circuits. The scope demonstrates ZAP’s capability to execute complex crude oil processing facility expansions in the DJ Basin, from inlet heat exchange through stabilization tower design and product rundown.
