ZAP Engineering compressor station electrification FEED study — Colorado

Onshore Oil & Gas Midstream

Compressor Station Electrification

FEED study evaluating the electrification of an existing gas turbine-driven compressor at a natural gas compressor station in Colorado.

Project Overview

ZAP was engaged by a major midstream operator to perform a Front-End Engineering & Design (FEED) study evaluating the technical feasibility and cost of electrifying an existing gas turbine-driven centrifugal compressor at a natural gas compressor station in Colorado. The study assessed replacing the gas turbine driver with an electric motor drive system, with the dual objectives of reducing emissions and debottlenecking throughput up to 190 MMSCFD.

Electric Motor Drive Evaluation

ZAP evaluated two vendor-proposed electric motor drive configurations against multiple criteria, including driver skid dimensions and weight, foundation compatibility, motor horsepower and output, variable frequency drive type and cooling requirements, auxiliary equipment needs, and control system integration with the existing compressor package controls.

Existing Infrastructure Assessment for Increased Throughput

In parallel, ZAP assessed the adequacy of the existing compressor block structure, suction scrubbers, and interstage and aftercooler air coolers to support increased throughput under the electrified configuration, supported by process simulation to characterize the revised operating envelope.

Technical Evaluation & Class 3 Cost Estimate

The FEED study produced a comparative technical evaluation of the electric motor drive options, including constructability and site integration considerations, and developed a Class 3 cost estimate to support the client’s capital planning process. The study gives the client a clear technical and economic basis for advancing the preferred electrification solution into detailed engineering, supporting both emissions reduction goals and long-term compression capacity growth.
