ZAP Engineering relief and flare system study at a cryogenic gas processing complex — West Virginia

Onshore Oil & Gas Midstream

Cryogenic Gas Complex Relief & Flare Study

Facility-wide pressure relief and flare system study at an operating cryogenic natural gas processing complex in West Virginia.

Project Overview

ZAP was engaged by a major midstream operator to perform a facility-wide pressure relief and flare system study at an operating cryogenic natural gas processing complex in West Virginia. The scope covered evaluation of installed relief devices against credible overpressure scenarios, piping stress analysis, and assessment of the existing flare and vent collection system.

Design Basis & Overpressure Scenario Evaluation

ZAP first issued a documented design basis fixing calculation methods and assumptions for client agreement before analysis began. Field data gathered during site visits was combined with client models and process simulation to evaluate piping losses, relieving temperatures, and materials of construction. Scenarios assessed included fire, hydraulic expansion, blocked outlet, control device failure, abnormal heat input, exchanger tube rupture, and vessel overfill.

Staged, Code-Compliant Mitigation Recommendations

Where devices were found inadequate, ZAP recommended mitigation in a staged hierarchy favoring the least intrusive modification, giving the client a prioritized, code-compliant basis for relief system upgrades. The project demonstrates ZAP’s capability to perform comprehensive relief and flare system studies on live, operating cryogenic gas processing facilities.
