Electric Calcination Furnace for Direct Air Capture

Detailed engineering for an electrically heated calcination furnace system at a direct air capture facility in Louisiana.

Project Overview

ZAP was engaged by a low-carbon technology company to provide detailed engineering, through Issued for Construction, for an electrically heated calcination furnace system at a Direct Air Capture facility in Louisiana. The facility applies the client’s proprietary indirect heating technology, calcining limestone inside purpose-engineered reactor tubes to produce a concentrated stream of process CO2 that can be captured without chemical separation.

Structural & Mechanical Design for the Calcination Tower

ZAP’s scope covered structural engineering and foundation design for the calcination process tower, including foundations for adjacent silos, electrical power distribution, and dust collection equipment. Mechanical scope included detailed design for material handling chutes, ducts, and interconnecting piping within the calcination area, along with RFQ packages and technical evaluation of equipment bids.

Electrical Power Distribution & Arc-Flash Study

Electrical engineering encompassed power distribution design for the calcination tower and ancillary loads, grounding and lighting design, PDC building specification, and a short circuit, coordination, and arc-flash study, supporting the tower’s substantial electric heating load.

Instrumentation, Controls & 3D Model Coordination

Instrumentation and controls scope included instrument index and I/O list development, control system architecture, cause and effect documentation, control panel drawings, and vendor drawing review, utilizing a PLC-based control system integrated with proprietary process instrumentation. A 3D model was developed across disciplines to support both IFB and IFC deliverable packages, coordinating structural, mechanical, electrical, and instrumentation scope for a first-of-its-kind carbon capture furnace system.
