Project Overview

ZAP was engaged by a power and data infrastructure developer to provide multidiscipline detailed engineering, procurement support, and construction support for a liquefied natural gas storage and vaporization facility in New Jersey. The facility serves as a backup natural gas supply for onsite power generation that powers a data center, delivering vaporized natural gas to the power plant whenever pipeline gas is unavailable, engineered for rapid startup from minimum turndown to full output in minutes.

LNG Storage, Truck Receiving & Regasification

LNG is delivered to the site by truck, stored, and regasified on demand to fuel the data center’s backup power plant whenever pipeline gas is unavailable. Storage is provided by a single full-containment tank with approximately 1.5 million gallons of net working volume. Receiving uses four truck-unloading skids across four bays, while send-out uses three in-tank column-mounted centrifugal pumps in a 3-by-50% configuration feeding three indirect water-bath vaporizers, delivering a maximum send-out of 56 MMSCFD at 150 psig.

Boil-Off Gas Recovery & Supporting Systems

Boil-off gas is recovered by reciprocating compressors, with supporting systems including an enclosed flare, nitrogen, instrument air, fire water, fuel gas, and custody-transfer metering, plus a documented future provision for boil-off gas re-liquefaction. ZAP also designed the tie-in points for vaporized natural gas delivery to the power generation facility and the electrical interface to the onsite generation, which supplies a minimum of 3 megawatts to run the facility and keep the data center’s backup power online.

Cryogenic Design & Seismic Considerations

Key technical challenges included cryogenic design at approximately minus 260 degrees Fahrenheit requiring specialized metallurgy and insulation, full-containment tank design to API and NFPA standards under high seismic risk classification, the rapid-startup turndown required for the data center contingency, a stringent residential property-line noise limit, and integration of vendor skid control packages into ZAP’s control and safety architecture.
