Pozzolan Grinding Circuit Expansion

Detailed engineering for a new parallel grinding line added to an existing pozzolan processing plant in Pueblo, Colorado.

Project Overview

ZAP was engaged by a specialty minerals producer to provide multidiscipline detailed engineering for a brownfield expansion of an existing pozzolan grinding plant in Pueblo, Colorado. The facility processes raw mineral feedstock into finely ground pozzolan, a supplementary cementitious material blended on site. To meet growing demand, ZAP engineered a complete second grinding line — the Mill 2 Circuit — designed to operate in parallel with the existing line, either simultaneously or independently.

New Grinding Circuit Design & Plant Tie-In

ZAP’s scope covered the full process, mechanical, civil, structural, electrical, and instrumentation and controls design for the new circuit and its building, electrical room, and compressor room. The design ties into the existing plant at the Mill 1 dryer discharge and routes feed through a new diverter and bucket elevator into a surge bin ahead of the mill. Ground product passes through a high-efficiency air classifier and inline size analyzer, with on-specification material conveyed to an existing silo and coarse material recycled back to the mill.

Ball Mill Engineering & Supporting Systems

ZAP led the engineering of a used 13.5-foot by 28-foot ball mill the client had purchased, working with the manufacturer to specify the internals to a vendor-supportable standard. ZAP also designed the supporting dust collection, plant air, HVAC, a second utility transformer, and associated power distribution, performed the electrical studies, and prepared procurement packages, using a 3D laser scan to verify as-built tie-in conditions.
